Agustin “Gus” Niese
MILLER CITY - Agustin “Gus” Niese, 10, of Miller City, passed away at 5 a.m., Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Mercy Health St. Vincent Hospital, Toledo, Ohio. He was born on February 11, 2016, in Findlay to Tyler and Kayla (Steffan) Niese.
Gus was the beloved first of four children. He is survived by his parents; his sisters: Cecelia and Mabel Niese; and his grandparents: Thomas and Tina Niese, and Kathleen (Rieman) Steffan and partner Bruce Mandel. He was preceded in death by his brother, Archer Niese and grandfather, George Steffan.
Gus loved his family and friends so dearly. Other surviving family include: Andy and Katelyn (Gable) Niese and their children: Mya, Drew, and Molly; Courtney (Niese) and Jeff Gerten and their children: Theo, Ophelia, Jericho and Adalee; Godmother Whitney (Niese) and Jeremy Gerding and their children: Maelie and Emery; Kylie (Niese) and Noah Otto and their daughter, Hadley; Anne Steffan; Godfather Paul Steffan; and Reid Steffan.
Gus loved spending time with friends and family. He and his cousins were often found playing wiffle ball in the back yard or doing funny dances. He also loved helping his grandparents and riding one of their electric bikes all over the farm.
Gus was the kind of kid that would give you the shirt off his back or tell you the secrets to hitting a home run. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends and had lots of plans that his parents loved bringing him to. He always put others first.
He was in love with roller coasters and was often talking about them or watching videos on them. He enjoyed spending days with his best friend here as they worked on finishing their list to ride all the roller coasters. He was a collector of baseball cards and squishies.
He had a servant’s heart. He never wanted people to feel left out and was a friend to all. He was involved in Boy Scouts where he truly learned to do his best.
Gus had a strong love of baseball and had played since Kindergarten for Miller City School. He also played travel baseball for The West Ohio Wombats, where he was often found at short stop or left field. Gus was a sponge for learning baseball knowledge and skills. He had a conviction for the sport that truly melted hearts but was willing to help teach anyone the sport if that meant more players on the field. Gus loved both of his baseball teams and had made so many new friends just this past year getting ready for tournament season. His parents were happy that he was able to play 2 more games earlier the day of his accident. His dreams were to play for the Miller City High School baseball team and then Cincinnati Reds and bring them to the next world series. He also loved practicing baseball and watching baseball with his dad and was often found talking about a game play of some sort at the supper table or while watching baseball on tv.
He was looking forward to finally being a 5th grader at Miller City-New Cleveland School and believed this year was going to be the best one yet. He was surrounded by so many friends and enjoyed seeing them daily mostly for the next pick-up game or to talk baseball or roller coasters or about what the plans were for this weekend. He also enjoyed playing football and basketball but made it very clear he was going to be on that high school ball diamond someday. He had many stories of his amazing friends at school and the goofy things they would do at the lunch table.
Gus often made videos online and was amazed when he would get one more follower that now are memories for those here. He will live on through the organs he was able to donate that again proved how big his heart truly was for others.
Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leipsic with Fr. Nick Cunningham officiating. Burial will be at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Leipsic. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic and 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday prior to Mass at St. Mary’s Parish Life Center, Leipsic. At visitation he would be amazed to see everyone wear their favorite baseball team “drip” (clothing).
