Alphonse "Al" Slattman
CONTINENTAL - Alphonse "Al" Slattman, 76, of Continental died at 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born November 24, 1936 in Putnam County to the late Edmund and Rita (Meyer) Slattman.  On June 16, 1956, he married Norma Ford who survives in Continental.
Survivors also include 5 children: Terry (Cindy) Slattman of Paulding, and Tina (Rob) Breisinger, Tammy (Alan) Boecker, Edward (Dana) Slattman, and Teresa (Mike) Varner, all of Continental; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 5 brothers and sisters: Ray (special friend Nancy) Slattman of Tinora, Mary Catherine (Larry) Holman of Ottawa, Anna Marie (Chick) Tumblin of North Creek, Janet Smith of Wapak, and Clyde (Michelle) Varner of Napoleon.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather: Byron Varner; a granddaughter: Monica Boecker; a great-granddaughter: Tori Boecker; a brother: Ronald Slattman; and 2 sisters-in-law: Sandy Varner and Rita Slattman.
Al was owner of Al's Mower Sales, Continental since 1969.  He was retired from Zeller Corp after 25 years and drove bus for Brookhill for 16 years. He was a member of St. John The Baptist Church, Continental and a member of Ottawa Eagles and Sons of The American Legion Post #541, Continental.  He loved bowling on Tuesday night bowling league with his team, Al's Mower Sales, riding his motorcycle, fishing, and working in his mower shop where he passed on his love for working on lawn mowers to his children and grandchildren. Al enjoyed working in his flower garden, traveling with his beautiful wife and family, and spending time with them camping at Blue Water Campground.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 22, 2013 at St. John The Baptist Church, Continental with Fr. Charles Obinwa officiating.  Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental.  Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.  A scripture service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
