Barry R. Burk
Barry R. Burk, 67, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away, October 5, 2013 at Mercy St. Ann's Medical Center after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Barry was born in Leipsic, Ohio, August 25, 1946 to Ethyl (Wittig) and the late Harold Burk. After graduating from Ohio Northern University with a BSE in secondary education, and Bowling Green State University with an ME in counseling, Barry began an illustrious career of teaching, beginning with social studies at Continental Local School in Continental, Ohio. After a brief tenure, Barry worked as a job placement specialist at the Toledo Society for the Blind and then again at the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, where he eventually retired in 2003 as the Rehabilitation Supervisor.
Barry, a longtime HIV/AIDS advocate, participated in various support groups for persons living with HIV and AIDS, and volunteered his time and experience to the HIV Testing Clinic at the University of Toledo Medical Center, Ryan White Advisory Board, David's House Compassion, and HARK.
He is survived by his beloved mother Ethyl Burk, of Leipsic, Ohio and brother Craig (Brenda) Burk and family, of Mooresville, North Carolina.
Barry will always be remembered for his profound commitment to helping and serving the community, his generous spirit, his welcoming smile and his high regard for his friends. We are grateful to have spent time with such a special person, who continues to be an inspiration to us all.
