Bernadine Marie Houck

CONTINENTAL – Bernadine Marie Houck, 98, of Continental died 11:37 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023, at her residence.  She was born May 6, 1924, in Putnam County to the late Henry and Odelia (Miller) Bensman.  On June 2, 1948, she married Robert Houck, who died February 16, 1976.

Bernadine is survived by 2 children:  Jim (Joyce) Houck and Caroline (Jack) Etter, both of Continental; 3 grandchildren:  Laura (Gary) Ford, Matt (Mindy) Houck and Mandy (Nelson) Panning;  9 great-grandchildren:  Darcy Schwarzman, Jacob Schwarzman, Zach (Vanessa) Schwarzman, Ellie Schwarzman, Maddie Houck, Grady Houck, Ryan Houck, Oliver Panning and Andersen Panning; 2 great-great-grandchildren:  Jameson and Jase Schwarzman; 2 sisters-in-law:  Marilyn Houck of Napoleon and Helen Houck of Holgate; and many generations of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded by a brother:  Herbert Bensman; 4 sisters:  Hildegard Bensman, Gertrude Deaubler, Geraldine Houck, Agnes Shadle and their spouses.

Bernadine retired after more than 40 years from Westinghouse, Lima and was a member of the IEW.  She was a member of St Barbara's Catholic Church, Cloverdale and its Altar Rosary Society and C. L. of C.  She also was a member of the Continental American Legion Auxiliary.  She loved going to polka dances and was a member of the Ohio Polka Boosters.  She enjoyed a good bottle of wine and going to the casino.  She loved sending thoughtful cards to her family and friends.

Her greatest love was her family.  She greatly enjoyed having them all over to enjoy a meal and playing games together.  She could always be found attending the many events that her grandchildren participated in.

The funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2023 at St. Barbara's Catholic Church, Cloverdale with Father John Stites and George Mahas officiating.  Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental and again for 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
