Betty E. Hughes

OTTAWA - Betty E. Hughes, 92, of Ottawa died at 8:24 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Heritage House, New Castle, IN. She was born May 22, 1924 in Springfield, MA to the late Albert E. and Doris (Callahan) Root.  On August 21, 1943 she married Charles H. Hughes who died February 27, 1987.

She is survived by a son, Robert E. (Virginia Sue) Hughes of New Castle, IN; 3 grandsons, Brian (Sarah) Hughes, Jeff (Michelle) Hughes, and Brad (Jackie) Hughes;  and ten great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Albert Jr., and Leslie (Joe) Root.

Betty was office manager for John M. Boose and Son, Lima for 50 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Ottawa, where she had been secretary for ten years and a member of United Methodist Women. She was a member of Ottawa Eagles Auxiliary, Ottawa Senior Citizens, and DAR. After retirement, she volunteered for St. Rita's Hospital where she acquired 2000 hours, Red Cross where she received the Clara Barton Award for 2000  hours and the National Red Cross Hammond Award for 2007-2008. She also volunteered at Putnam Acres, Ottawa Senior Citizens, Ottawa Library, Putnam County Chapter of the Red Cross, and the reading program for Ottawa Public Schools. She was also a United Way Employee of the year.  Betty was an avid bridge player and loved to read mystery books.

A Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Ottawa with Pastor Lynda Lockwood officiating. Burial will follow in Harman Cemetery, Gilboa. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or to the Putnam County Library.
