MILLER CITY – Beverly J. Leis, 79, of Miller City, passed away at 7:08 AM on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 8,1943 in Leipsic to the late John and Martha (Kuhlman) Deters. On November 17, 1962, she married Lavon Leis, who preceded her death on October 10, 2006. Survivors include two children: James (Jan) Leis of Miller City, and Kathleen Schmitz of Glandorf; five grandchildren: John (Skylar) Leis, Jessica (Derrick) Schierloh, Jennifer (Chad) Schroeder, Kelly Schmitz, and Bradley Schmitz; three great-grandchildren: Mack Schierloh, Lincoln Schroeder, Scarlett Leis, and two more on the way; and a sister Roselia Verhoff, of Ottawa.
She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Schmitz; a brother Harold Deters; three sisters: Angela Westrick Schulte, Dolores Verhoff, and Viola Maag; brothers-in-law: Alton Westrick, Wilfred Schulte, Ralph Verhoff, Omer Maag, Gerald Verhoff, John Siefker, and Donald Niese; and sisters-in-law: Catherine Deters, Dolores Siefker and Marvelle Niese.
Bev retired from Miller City-New Cleveland Schools in 1997, after 30 years of service, serving as the treasurer for the final fourteen years of her career. Bev was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, where she was an organist for 43 years. In addition, she was active on church committees, and was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia.
Bev enjoyed spending time with her family and attending the many activities of her grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing and was a member of the Sewing 4 Fun group. She really enjoyed sewing for her children and grandchildren.
She also enjoyed history and was a member of the Ohio History Connection and the Putnam County Historical Society, where she also volunteered. She did extensive research into her family's genealogy and, published and distributed the information to her family.
Bev was a member of the Miller City Sportsman Club and Friends of the Putnam County District Library.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Miller City with Father Scott Perry officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
