Carl A. Maag
OTTAWA – Carl A. Maag, 93, of Ottawa, passed away at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023 at The Meadows of Ottawa. He was born June 23, 1930, in New Cleveland to the late Frank Paul and Margaret (Nierman) Maag. On July 7, 1954, he married Frances A. Atencio, who preceded him in death on September 1, 2020.
Survivors include seven children: Michael Maag of Kalida, Theresa (Mark) Schechter of Ottawa, Jennifer (Bill) Westenbarger of McComb, Steven (Barbara) Maag of Deltona, FL, Victoria Maag, Carla Maag, both of Ottawa and Phillip (Nancy) Maag of Kalida; eleven grandchildren: Denice (Steven)Ventura, Matthew (April) Schechter, Brianna Maag, Ryan (Trish) Westenbarger, Nathan Westenbarger, Ashley (Brandon) Stedman, Kevan (Megan) Westenbarger, Austan Westenbarger, Andrew (Chrissy) Maag, Trevor (Jenna) Maag, and McKayla Maag; sixteen great-grandchildren: Jacob Ventura, Lily Ventura, Eleanor Schechter, Jimmy Westenbarger, Maggie Westenbarger, Carolyn Westenbarger, John Westenbarger, LeiAnna Stedman, Brody Stedman, Cassidy Stedman, Callie Stedman, Ella Westenbarger, Savannah Maag, Charlotte Maag, Addison Maag and Mason Maag; two siblings: Clayton Maag of Kalida and Sr. Francis Margaret " Ruth" Maag of Dayton, KY; and sister-in-law, Millie Maag of Findlay.
He was also preceded in death by five siblings: Alice (Eugene) Brandon, Delores Kiernan, Janette (Albert) Jacobs, Paul (Janice) Maag and Oscar Maag.
Carl was a lifetime farmer and veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served overseas during the Korean War. He was a former member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Kalida and present member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. Carl was a life member of the Ohio Farmers Union, where he served on the election board, Ottawa VFW 9142, where he served as Commander, Ottawa American Legion Post 63, Amvets and Putnam County Color Guard. He was a member and former president of the Kalida Lions Club and Allen County Farmers Union. He also served on the Putnam County Democratic Party Committee as Vice Chair and was the 2019 Grand Marshall of the Kalida Pioneer. Carl was involved in delivering blankets to all the veterans in Putnam County nursing homes. He was the former owner of E-Z Campground since 1993. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family. He was an avid Facebook junky and was involved in all activities and functions at the Ottawa Meadows, but most of all, he enjoyed serving others.
Funeral Mass will begin 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2023 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Scott Kramer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Kalida with military rites by the Ottawa VFW, American Legion, Amvets and DAV. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6 – 8 p.m., Thursday 2 – 8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to mass at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, OTTAWA.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Life Center Building Fund or the Putnam County Hospice.
