Darrell Eugene Elkins

CONTINENTAL – Darrell Eugene Elkins, 76, of Continental, died at 3:01 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at Lima Memorial Hospital surrounded by family.  He was born December 7, 1946 in Allen County to the late Cecil Paul and Lillian Louise (Myers) Elkins. On December 23, 1970, he married Beverly Kay Sommers, who survives in Continental.

Other survivors include five children: Brenda (Kenny) Troyer, Doug (D'Arcy) Elkins, both of Continental, Brenette (Dan) Barnhart of Kalida, Donavin (Katelyn) Elkins of Leipsic and Derrick (Amy) Elkins of Defiance; nine grandchildren: Ryan (Kacie) Troyer, Hannah (Brandon) Cicalese, Dillon Elkins, Clara (Brayden Recker) Elkins, Mackenzie Barnhart, Mallorie Barnhart, Landon Elkins, Gavin Elkins and Camden Elkins; a great-grandchild, Everleigh Troyer and one more on the way; and nine siblings: Paul Elkins of Lima, Larry Elkins of Continental, Gary Elkins of Cecil, Ila (Craig) Combs of Continental, Doyle Elkins of Kalida, Lovella (Thomas) Wehri of Continental, Joyce (Steve) Cavanaugh, Shanda (Dave) Tonjes, both of Defiance and Nancy (Greg) Schnipke of Miller City.

Darrell was a 1965 graduate of Continental High School and veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 – 1968. He was a lifelong farmer, owner of Elkins Service, Kieferville and retired from General Motors, Defiance in 2015. Darrell was also an EMT/Paramedic in Continental from 1974 – 2014.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, hosting family gatherings and events, playing horseshoes and euchre and planting flowers in his flowerbeds.

Funeral services will begin 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 26, 2023 at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township with Fr. Mark Hoying. Burial will follow in Varner Cemetery, Greensburg Township with military rites by the Continental American Legion. Visitation will be held from 2 – 8 p.m. on Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
