Dorna J. Wood, 82, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, January 21, at Coventry Meadows Assisted Living in Fort Wayne, IN. She was born on November 11, 1931 and was the daughter of the late Brice E. and Anna M. (Schnegg) Watkins. She married Doyle A. Wood on July 12, 1952 who preceded her in death November 16, 1991. As soon as the youngest of her five children was in school, Dorna began working with the Putnam County school system as assistant to the school psychologists, a job that she loved and that she remembered fondly years after her retirement. While living in Ottawa, Ohio, Dorna was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and was passionate about the church choir, in which she sang alto, ultimately taking over the role of choir director. She also served as Sunday School Director. Dorna excelled as a seamstress, a baker, a cross stitcher and as a flower gardener. She will be remembered for the many pies and cookies that she shared with the church, friends and family. She was an avid and low handicap golfer and was women's champion of (then) Kildaire Golf Club on five different occasions.
Survivors include her children, Joni L. (Douglas) Lehman of Fort Wayne, IN., Kim E. (David) Ohlweiler of Mason, OH., Karen L. (Jack) Stueve of Minster, OH., and Mark D. (Cheryl) Wood of Germantown, WI; sisters, Beverly A. (John) Reeder of Findlay, OH., Dorothy M. (Wilfred) Fuerst of Columbus Grove, OH., Naomi R. (William) Donaldson of Hilton Head, SC, Shirley J (Gene) Gray of Findlay, OH.; a brother, Michael W. (Janet) Watkins of Columbus Grove, OH.; 9 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Jill Wood of Van Wert, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Harry A. Watkins in 2007, and her son, Robert S. Wood in 2014.
Funeral Service is 1 p.m., Saturday January 25 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 137 N. Pratt St., Ottawa, OH with Pastor Lynda Lockwood officiating. Visitation is from 4 – 7 p.m., Friday January 24, 2014 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, 916 E. Main Street, Ottawa, OH and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow the service in Harman Cemetery, Gilboa, OH. Preferred memorials to the Trinity United Methodist Church.
