Obituary

Dr. Michael R. Welch, Sr.

Dr. Michael R. Welch, Sr., Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, surrounded by his devoted wife of 60 years and the family and friends who loved him dearly. Born February 8, 1947, in Ogdensburg, New York, Michael was the cherished son of Eleanor (Welch) Caruso and Carlton Welch.

Dr. Welch served the University of Notre Dame for 36 years, shaping generations of students and contributing profoundly to the fields of sociology, criminology, religion, and political behavior. His career included roles as: Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Notre Dame; Chairperson, Department of Sociology (2000–2003); and Faculty Affiliate, Center for the Study of Religion and Society.

He authored more than 60 peer‑reviewed articles, numerous book chapters, and delivered presentations at major national and international conferences. His scholarship explored themes such as social trust, religiosity, deviance, political orientations, and social integration. His work—including studies like “Generating Trust in Congregations” and “The Radius of Trust”—continues to influence sociological research today.

In his life beyond academia, Michael was a lifelong fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a talented bass guitar player, and a devoted lover of all things chocolate. He found joy in traveling with his wife, Helena, and treasured every moment spent with his family. His warmth, humor, and kindness made him a beloved presence in every room he entered.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Helena Welch, and their children: Kristen and Scott Reynolds, Michael Welch, Jr. and Stephanie, Scott Welch, Brian E. Welch and Andrea.

He was the proud grandfather of Nicholas, Payton, Lily, Grace, Colin, Carter, Mason, and Megan, and great‑grandfather to Avelynn, Griffin, and Ayla. He also leaves behind his adored grand‑fur children, Cannoli, Wrigley, Beast, and Apollo.

Michael is preceded in death by his beloved son Sean Michael Welch, and by his parents, Eleanor (Welch) Caruso and Carlton Welch.

Dr. Welch will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his unwavering dedication to scholarship, and his profound love for his family. His legacy lives on through his work, his students, and the countless lives he touched with compassion and wisdom.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Wednesday, August 5th, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a recitation of the rosary to follow, at Palmer Funeral Home (Hickey Chapel) and a Funeral Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame on Thursday, August 6th at 9:30 a.m., where his life and legacy will be prayerfully remembered.
