Obituary

Esther D. Myers
ELIDA - Esther D. Myers of Elida, Ohio, died peacefully on November 20, 2014 at Van Crest Health Care Center in Delphos, Ohio, after a short stay.
She was born February 7, 1919 in Ottawa, Ohio, to Maurice Edward and Clara E. (Lammers) Ducey.  She was a graduate of Ottawa High School.  In 1942, after he had enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps but before he had shipped out to Europe, Esther married Maurice W. Myers of Dupont, Ohio, who died in March 1990 after 48 years of marriage.  She was also preceded in death by her only daughter, Beverly, her only grandchild, Christopher D. Krebs, as well as four sisters, two brothers, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Early in her adult life, Esther worked in the Putnam County Courthouse in Ottawa, Ohio, and during the war years she lived in Toledo, Ohio with her sister Helen, where she worked at Devilbis, and cared for her infant daughter Beverly.  Following the war, she and her husband Maurice eventually built a home and settled in Lima, Ohio where they raised their family.  In 1972, they moved to Elida, Ohio.
Esther was quiet and reserved but strong-willed and a devoted wife and mother.  She worked hard and tirelessly her entire life, contributing to and supporting her family and the upkeep of her home.  She spent nearly 70 years of her life devoted to the operation of the seasonal family business, Myers Concessions, Inc., working alongside her husband until his death and then continuing to work with her son Gregory and company employees, traveling the summer fair and festival circuit working events in Ohio and surrounding states.  For six decades, she and her family worked indoor events in down town, Toledo during winter months, at venues including The Sports Arena, Civic Auditorium,  and Sea Gate Convention Centre.
When home Esther enjoyed spending countless hours outside working in her yard, trimming, mowing, planting, pulling, raking, or shoveling as needed, according to the season. She so very much just liked being "home." She had strong political beliefs, but mostly kept them to herself. She was proud of a near perfect voting record, including every November election, and she voted in nearly every primary for more than 70 years.
Esther was one of the founding members of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish in Lima where her son attended grade school. She volunteered for more than seven years in the St. Charles School Cafeteria in the 1960's as part of the, " Friday Lunch Bunch," along with other parish mothers of students.
After Lima Central Catholic finally built its own gymnasium, Esther and her son in recent years regularly attended most of the home LCC Boy's Varsity basketball games coached by Bob Seggerson, that she very much enjoyed.  The past two seasons, she would faithfully listen to the LCC games on the radio and watch them on TV-44.
She is survived by her only son, Gregory Myers, of Elida, Ohio, one sister, Hilda Jean (Tune) Nitschke of Toledo, a brother, Gary M. Ducey of Ottawa, sister-in law Margaret (Peggy) Ducey of Ottawa, sister-in-law Elizabeth (Betty) Ducey of Ottawa, sister-in-law JoAnne Prowant of Dupont, numerous nephews, nieces, many long-time former and current employees, friends, associates and loyal customers of Myers Concessions.
Her son is convinced his mother's biggest regret in her final months was the realization that for the first time she wasn't there to complete the entire 2014 fair schedule with him due to her declining health this past September.
Greg would like to thank Dr. James Bowlus, Victoria, and other staffers at the doctor's office who helped him keep Mom on her feet all these years.  Also the (4-K) nursing staff at Lima St. Rita's Medical Center who took good care of Esther in September and the nurses, aides and staff at Van Crest Health Care Center in Delphos, Ohio who have cared for her with him the past two months.
Greg wishes to single out the loving and continuing support shown by his dearest friends of 40 years Nancy Rybak of Mesa, Arizona, who was always his mother's biggest cheerleader.
And he would not have been able to handle the past two months without the assistance of his mom's niece Lynn Miller of Decatur, Indiana and nephew William Prowant of Dupont, Ohio, who was fortunately and timely there in the room with Greg at the end to give support.
After a lifetime of working long, hard hours, Esther can finally rest, free from pain, reunited with her long missed Mother, beloved husband, daughter, grandson, brothers and sisters, former neighbors, and so many departed friends.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Dupont, Ohio, next to her husband.  There will be no visitation.  There will be no services.  There will be no wake, per Esther's wishes.
She didn't want to inconvenience anybody.
Arrangements are under the direction of Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental, Ohio.
