"Beanie" Grimes

Eugene Henry "Beanie" Grimes OAKWOOD - Eugene Henry "Beanie" Grimes formerly of Oakwood entered into eternity peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Ebeid Hospice Center of Northwest Ohio in Sylvania. He was born to Lester and Gertrude (Font) Grimes on August 28, 1941, in Junction, Ohio. Eugene was the youngest brother to Edward (Ellen) Grimes, Edgar "Ned" (Ruthanne) Grimes and Ellen (Jim) Scantlin. Preceded in death by his mother at the age of two; Beanie became a resident of the Marsh Foundation in Van Wert at the age of nine. While there he helped in the garden, owned his own steer, and accepted Jesus as his Savior at the age of ten. Beanie left the care of the Marsh Foundation at age 17 and graduated from Oakwood High School in 1961; where he lived until December 2020. He proudly served six years in the National Guard after graduation and was a member of the Oakwood American Legion. Beanie retired in 1998 from Maintenance at General Motors Powertrain Defiance Foundry after thirty-five years, where he remains a member of the Retiree Local 211 UAW. Beanie has been a faithful life-long member of church where he served as a bus ministry leader and deacon over the years. He was known for selling and gifting BUCK knives. He was a talented harmonica player, knowledgeable clockmaker, and enjoyed all things hit-and-miss engines, including steam engine shows. He restored and built several Cushman Motor Scooters, and spent many summers attending Vintage Motor Bike Club meets with family and friends in Portland, Indiana. Beanie was also very popular for his sno-cone machine that helped to make any event extra special. Beanie has been known for his kindness and generosity. He was active, fun and enjoyed a good joke, making him beloved by all and a wonderful uncle to his vast number of nieces and nephews. On June 25, 1983, Beanie married Gloria (Schick) Grimes who survives at their home in Toledo. Together they raised and loved their blended family. Yearly summer vacations were a highlight for all of them including Cedar Point, Kings Island, the Great Smoky Mountains, historical sites, and camping at Pokagon State Park. Gloria's steadfast love and care gave Beanie many additional years of health to enjoy with their family. Prioritizing church and trust in the Lord, Gloria and Beanie had forty-one years of marriage together. Beanie married Cynthia Jowaine (Brown) Grimes in 1965. She preceded him in death in 1982. Married for seventeen years they are survived by their two sons Marty (Michelle) Grimes of Defiance and Josh (Kim) Grimes of Oakwood, and their children Franklin (Leah), Jowaine (Matt), Hunter (Aly) and Sawyer (Taylor), as well as great-grandchildren Marion Eugene, Nova, Laikynn, and Wesley Eugene. He is also survived by his stepchildren Rob (Dani) Fry, Bonnie (Mike) Mahnke, and Andrea (Josh) Quigg, and their children Chase (Nicole), Tyler, Brendon (Destiny), Brooklyn, Emma, Michaela, Josiah, Jett and Liam, as well as great-grandchildren Audrina, Carter, Calix, Rebel, Isebella, Braxton, Braylen and Brayden. Also surviving are his brother Ed, in-laws Bob (Sue) Brown, Bill (Linda) Brown, Larry (Diane) Brown, Rainelle (Bill) Koenn, Robert Schick, Dana Bair, and Lesa (Dave) Mansfield. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Ned and Ellen. Parents-in-law Robert (Bob) and Virginia Brown and Gilbert and Colleen Schick. A brother-in-law Leo (Rita) Brown and a sister-in-law Ruthann Bair; as well as an infant grandson Seth Quigg. Visitation will be held at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, 610 Walnut St., Oakwood, Ohio on Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at Beanies home church of North Mount Zion, 22857 Oh-15, Continental, Ohio on Friday, May 2, 2025, at noon with visitation one hour prior at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Prairie Chapel Cemetery in Oakwood, Ohio.
