Eugene "Gene" Byrne OTTOVILLE – Eugene "Gene" Byrne, 89, of Ottoville, passed away surrounded by his family at 7:44 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at his residence.  He was born February 20, 1936, in Cloverdale to the late Orion and Edwina (Miller) Byrne.  On January 15, 1955, he married Clarice Rayle, they were married for 70 years, she survives in Ottoville. Gene is also survived by four children:  Dennis (Dianne) Byrne of Van Wert, Laurie (Paul) Boecker, Kent (Mish Workman) Byrne, and Beth (Jason Machunas) Kroeger, all of Ottoville; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law: Carol Byrne of Ottoville. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lyndsey Byrne; two brothers, Robert (Jean) Byrne, and Hubert Byrne; and a sister, Rita Byrne-Lewandowski. Gene was a retired publishing editor from the Van Wert Times Bulletin and the Delphos Herald. He also worked at the Ottoville Hardware doing repairs of all kinds.  He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and Ottoville VFW Auxiliary. Gene loved fishing, reading, spending time with his kids and grandkids, and being their taxi driver.  He also enjoyed puzzles and playing cards.  Gene had coached Little League baseball. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday March 3, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, with Very Reverend George Mahas officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ottoville.  A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. with a scripture service at 1:45 p.m. and again on Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township.
