Eugene "Gene" Richard Deitrick
OAKWOOD – Eugene R. Deitrick, 83 of Oakwood, passed away at 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at CHP Inpatient Hospice Center, Defiance, with his daughters by his side after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Gene was born on March 4, 1941, in Continental, Ohio, to the late Richard and Pauline (Drew) Deitrick. He graduated from Continental High School in 1959. On August 17, 1968, he married Karen J. (Casteel) Deitrick, who preceded him in death on April 19, 2024. He was drafted into the United States Army, where he fought in Vietman. Gene worked at General Motors in Defiance, Ohio, retiring in December of 1996 after 30 years. He was a member of the UAW and Payne American Legion, Post 297.
In his spare time and after retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and maintaining his yard and garden. Gene also enjoyed watching NASCAR, Michigan Outdoors, Machinery Pete and other sports. He cherished the time he spent with his family and grandchildren.
Gene will be deeply missed by his daughters: Annette (Jack) Baumle of Payne and Brenda (Steve) Doster of Paulding; five grandchildren: Addison Baumle, Grant Baumle, Kaitlyn Doster, Macy Doster and Alex Doster. His presence in their lives was a source of strength and his memory will forever be cherished.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and a sister, Patty (Meeks) Bland.
A funeral service for Gene will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental with Pastor Bud Larimore officiating. Burial will follow at Sherman Cemetery, Oakwood with military rites by Payne American Legion, Post 297. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family's wishes are for the memorial donations to be given to the Fisher House for Military Families, Ann Arbor, MI or CHP of Paulding.
