Fr. Herman F. Scherger

CLOVERDALE – Fr. Herman F. Scherger, 91, of Cloverdale, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at his residence.  He was born January 2, 1932, in Liberty Township, Tiffin, Ohio to the late Herman Anthony and Louise Mary (Smith) Scherger.  On May 31, 1958, he was ordained into the priesthood by Bishop Rehring in Holy Rosary Cathedral, Toledo, for the Diocese of Toledo.

Fr. Scherger is survived by several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

He is preceded in death by seven siblings: Bernard (Anna Margaret) Scherger, Carl (Germaine) Scherger, Cyril (Hilda) Scherger, Gerald (Imelda) Scherger, Zita (Ernest) Hohman, Mary Louise (Victor) Huss, and Germain (Burl) Perry.

Fr. Scherger grew up in his home parish, St. Andrews, Liberty.  After his ordination, he began his faithful journey on June 21, 1958, at St. Joseph Parish, Galion where he served as the associate pastor for a year. He then went to St. Teresa, Toledo until 1960 and St. Agnes, Toledo until 1966.  From there he went to St. Mary Parish, Antwerp; St. Mary of the Snows Parish, Mansfield; St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish, Norwalk; Immaculate Conception Parish, Cecil; St. Mary Parish, (Junction), Defiance; St. John the Baptist, Continental; St. Barbara Parish, Cloverdale; Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, New Bavaria; St. John the Baptist Parish, Payne; and St. Joseph Parish, Paulding.  He retired July 2, 2007, after 49 years, while he was serving as associate pastor for Saint Joseph Parish, Paulding.

The Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023, at St. Barbara Catholic Church, Cloverdale with Bishop Daniel Thomas officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Barbara Cemetery, Cloverdale.  Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at St. Barbara Catholic Church, Cloverdale and again on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.  Arrangements are under the direction of LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township.
