Shorty worked at Buckeye Sugar Mill in Ottawa, worked 15 years part time at Verhoff Alfalfa Mills, and 15 years at E.J. Meyers and Sons. After he retired he decided to go to work at the Village of Ottawa as a park custodian, his pride was painting the lines on the baseball field and mowing the lawn. He enjoyed working on vehicles, gardening, fishing, and having barbecues where he would grill his famous chicken. He liked riding his lawnmower and just mowing neighbors lawns. Shorty loved making breakfast for his grandchildren after they spent the night. His quote was "Family is everything, if you don't have family you have nothing in life. If you have family, then your a wealthy person." So Shorty was a very wealthy man because he left behind a very rich legacy.
