George W. Shirey
CONTINENTAL – George W. Shirey, 86, of Continental died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Mercy Hospital, Defiance. He was born September 20, 1925 in Cloverdale to the late Russell and Treva (Martin) Shirey. On September 10, 1943 he married Carol Rockey and she died November 13, 2009.
He is survived by 3 children: Judy (Howard) Mayes of Continental, Mike (Lana) Shirey of Continental, and Martin (Susan) Shirey of Defiance; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother: Fred Shirey. He was also preceded in death by a grandson: Jordan C. Shirey; 2 daughters-in-law: Mary Lou Shirey and Rose Shirey; a sister: Zola Mae Leatherman; and a sister-in-law: Sylvia Shirey.
George was a self-employed carpenter and an Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Continental American Legion #541, the Defiance American AMVETS 1991, and the Grover Hill VFW # 2873.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental with Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will be in Cascade Cemetery, Cloverdale with military rites by the Continental American Legion. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Jordan C. Shirey Memorial Fund, Defiance.
