Gladys M. "Pape" Spangler
OTTAWA - Gladys M. "Pape" Spangler, 89, of Ottawa, passed away 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at The Meadows of Ottawa surrounded by her family. She was born November 17, 1932 in Dayton to the late Cecil and Gladys (Rhynard) Wion. On April 11, 1953, she married Leo M. "Moose" Spangler. He died on March 14, 2003.
Survivors include two children: Michael (Pamela) Spangler of Leipsic and Julie (Daniel) Selhorst of Ottawa; five grandchildren: Samuel (Alli) Spangler, Sarah (Ben Lindholm) Spangler, Jason (Shannon) Selhorst, Britany (Steve) Beckman, Kelley (MJ Lotko) Selhorst; six great-grandchildren: Jaden Selhorst, Jocelyn Selhorst, Josie Selhorst, Jarrett Selhorst, Carson Beckman and Chloe Beckman; and lifelong friend, Barbara Snyder.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Randall Lee Spangler; a step-brother, Robert Wion; foster brother, Richard O'Neil; and foster sister, Joyce Brennan.
Gladys retired as an activities assistant from Calvary Manor Nursing Home and also worked at the Car-E-It Party Shop for many years. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. Gladys enjoyed volunteering for Leipsic Elementary for 20 years and Council on Aging. In 2008, she received the Council on Aging Senior Citizen of the Year Award for her many years of volunteer work. She loved angels, praying the rosary, Virgin Mary, coffee, football, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes. Her biggest enjoyment came from following her grandchildren in their activities and sporting events. Gladys especially loved her dog, Lucy.
A memorial mass will begin 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Fr. Scott Kramer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Leipsic.
Arrangements are under the direction of LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Putnam County Hospice.
