Gretchen R. Wheeler-Medley

SAN DIEGO, CA - Gretchen R. Wheeler-Medley, 88, of San Diego, CA, died November 12, 2019 at a hospice center in Carlsbad, CA.  Gretchen was diagnosed with end-stage metastatic cancer a few days before her death.

Gretchen was born in Cameron County, PA to Henry and Hazel (Whiting) Wheeler.  After her graduation from Williamsport High School, she joined her parents in Ottawa where her father had been transferred for work at the Sylvania plant.  The family developed many close friendships, including the Remick's, the Niese's and the Robertson's.  Gretchen worked as a telephone operator in Ottawa before leaving for dental training in Elkhart, IN, where she met her husband, Melson L. Medley.  Gretchen and Melson were married in Ottawa, moved to the Chicago suburbs where they lived for several years before settling in the San Diego area.

Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Dr. Pelton W. Wheeler, of Columbus, OH.

Gretchen is survived by her sons, Bernard (Joseph Crociante) and Sean (Andrea); her newly married granddaughter, Samantha (Drake Withers); her sister-in-law, Wilma S. Wheeler; and her nephews, Tyson, Carl (Jackie), Brad, Mark (Carmen) and their families.

Gretchen was an wonderful and loving daughter, mother, and friend to many.  She was a devoted grandmother to Samantha and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her.  Gretchen will be remembered by all who knew her for her positive outlook, kindness, and genuine interest in others.  She was an avid reader, talented artist, and belonged to a lively Bunko group for many years.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 2, 2020 at Harman Cemetery, Gilboa with Fr. John Drymon of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating.
