You can bet there is a lot of handshaking going on up in Heaven right now.
Hubert William Horstman, 93, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend to all, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2014. Born March 18, 1921, to the late Henry and Anna (Becker) Horstman of Cloverdale, he grew up on the Putnam County family farm and lived there his entire life. He wed his dear "Twinnie," Agnes (Jostpille), on June 9, 1953, and she survives. He was preceded in death by his sister, Leona Landin, of Ft. Jennings, in 2011.
Also surviving are his five children: Kay (Joe Unverferth), Kalida;  Dan (Una Nulty), Delphos; Pat (Randy Etter), Columbus, OH;  Susan (Kevin Wildenhaus), Plymouth, MI; and Lisa (David Whittle), Knoxville, TN; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
When Hubert was 14, he took on the responsibility of running the family farm after his father was seriously injured in a farming accident during the depths of The Great Depression. He continued to farm for many years while also working at Philips Display Components in Ottawa.
We had a very long goodbye with Dad after he was diagnosed with dementia in 2003, but he never lost his sense of humor nor the mischievous glint in his eye. We miss him terribly, but we know he is home at last after his long struggle and has earned a well-deserved rest. "Lo, blessed are our ears for they have heard; Yea, blessed are our eyes for they have seen: Let thunder break on man and beast and bird, And the lightning. It is something to have been." —G.K. Chesterton
We have many kind souls to thank for their care and support in these past few years, including home healthcare nurse and good friend Cheryl Gerding, the staff at St. Rita's Medical Center, Putnam County Homecare & Hospice, and, especially, the staff at The Meadows of Kalida for their constant care and support.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 20, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Township, 16085 St. Rt. 634, Ft. Jennings, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ft. Jennings, with Father Mark Hoying officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Putnam County Homecare & Hospice and The Alzheimer's Association.
