James C. Kahle
KALIDA – James C. Kahle, 82, of Kalida died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. He was born May 16, 1930 in Kalida to the late Ferd and Clementine (Bensman) Kahle. On October 1, 1960, he married Diane Ellerbrock and she survives in Kalida. Also surviving are 6 children: Julie (James) Meyerhoffer of Glandorf, Mary Jo (Ted) Furphy of Tucson, AZ, Cynthia (Tim) Fitzgerald of Kalida, Jayme (Karen) Kahle of Tucson, AZ, Tricia Loveland of Kalida and Eric Kahle of Liberty Center; 18 grandchildren: Jill, Katelyn and Matthew Meyerhoffer, Lauren, DeAnna and Andrew Furphy, Allison and Adam Fitzgerald, Jakob and Aaron Kahle, Phillip, Brooke and Elizabeth Loveland, Christian, Caleb, Cole, Catrin and Camden Kahle; and a sister: Gertrude Baldauf of Quincy, MI. He was preceded in death also by 5 brothers: Leon, Norbert, Cletus, Herman and Rudolph Kahle and 5 sisters: Margaret Suever, Agnes Niemeyer, Monica Schmersal, Celeste Broecker and Mary Ann Kahle.
Jim was a self-employed grain and turkey farmer. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Kalida and the Holy Name Society. He was a Navy veteran and a member of the Ottawa VFW. He was also a member of the Kalida Knights of Columbus, Kalida Fish & Game Club, National Turkey Federation, Putnam County Fair Board for 12 years, a volunteer at Challenged Champion Equestrian Center, a trail steward for Saguaro National Park in Tucson; a volunteer for Bureau of Land Management, Tucson Region and a past member of the Ohio Poultry Association. Jim received the Putnam County Soil Conservation Award in 1968 for outstanding conservation practices and received the Ohio Century Farm Award. He served as Chairman of the Ohio Turkey Marketing Board, was a member of the Putnam County Historical Society and participated in the Tucson non-motorized rodeo parade for 8 years by driving a team of horses.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Kalida with Fr. Mark Hoying officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Ottawa VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township (on the corner of St. Rts. 224 & 634) where there will be a VFW service at 7:00 p.m. and K of C Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
