Dr. James B. Overmier, MD

LEIPSIC - Dr. James B. Overmier, MD, 93, of Leipsic died 6:05 a.m., Friday, November 11, 2016 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.  He was born March 21, 1923 in Liberty Center, Ohio to the late Howard and Oneita (Kigar) Overmier.  He was a 1941 graduate of Liberty Center High School, received his Bachelor of Science in 1944 from The University of Toledo, and then his MD in 1948 from The Ohio State University.  On July 2, 1947 he married Jeanne Noland, and she survives in Leipsic

Also surviving are five daughters: Kathleen Rector of Leipsic, Marsha (Jack) White of Noblesville, IN, Connie (Ron) Phillips of Deshler, Sandy (Greg) Warnimont of Leipsic, and Beth Barrientes of Leipsic; a son, Jim (Sharon) Overmier of Johnstown; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one on the way.

He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Brigido "Brig" Barrientes; a grandson, Brett Ryan Warnimont; and five brothers: Marvin L. Overmier, Robert Overmier, Milton Overmier, Paul Overmier and Dr. Richard Overmier.

Dr. Overmier served Leipsic for many years as the town's family practitioner, 17 years as Putnam County Health Commissioner, 14 years as Putnam County Coroner, 42 years as the Medical Director for Putnam Acres Care Center in Ottawa, on staff at Lima Memorial Hospital and St. Rita's Medical Center, and 37 years as president of the Putnam County Heart Association.  He was a member of Leipsic United Methodist Church, Leipsic Board of Public Affairs, Leipsic Local School Board, Putnam County Medical Society, Ohio State Medical Association, American Medical Association, Ohio Academy of Family Practice, Fellow of American Academy of Family Practice, Ohio State Medical Alumni Society, Leipsic Chamber of Commerce, Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio and Ottawa Lodge #325, Ohio Eastern Star #16 of Lima, Scottish Rite 32 Degree Mason, and Valley of Toledo Zenobia Shrine.  He was also a US Air Force Veteran serving as a general practitioner during the Korean Conflict.

A funeral service will begin 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Leipsic United Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Weatherly officiating.  Burial will follow in Sugar Ridge Cemetery, Leipsic with military rites by the Leipsic American Legion and VFW.  Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, 2-8 p.m. Monday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic as well as one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research or the American Heart Association.
