John R. Mansfield
CONTINENTAL -John Richard Mansfield, 81, of Continental, died peacefully and entered his Heavenly home at 4:50 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015 at CHP Defiance Area Hospice Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 13, 1934, in Fostoria, Ohio to the late Leo "Hap" and Goldie (Friend) Mansfield. On July 2, 1955, he married Shirley Etter, who survives. This summer, they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
John is also survived by three children: Robin (Phil) Nofziger, Defiance, Kip Mansfield, Continental, and Sheri Mansfield, Napoleon; seven grandchildren: Sara (David) Reid, Atlanta, Mark (Adelle) Nofziger, Findlay, Alex Nofziger, Louisville, and Kayla, Madison, Makenzie, and Curtis Mansfield, all of Cloverdale; and four great-grandchildren: Mia and Calvin Reid, Atlanta, and Owen and Molly Nofziger, Findlay. He is also survived by a sister: Helen Beverly, Kalida, his brothers and sisters-in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Charles.
John was a 1952 graduate of Continental High School. He worked at Weatherseal, in Ottawa, before working as a production manager at SK Tools for thirty years in Defiance. He was the Monroe Township Clerk for thirty-three years and was a longtime member of the Dupont Church of the Brethren.
John was an avid Continental Pirate fan and supporter. For many years, he organized the Annual Continental Jr. Olympics. He loved sports and followed the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Indians. He also enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a Pinochle Club for around fifty years. One of John's greatest joys was spending time with his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Dupont Church of the Brethren, Dupont with Pastor Terry Porter and Pastor Bill Helmlinger officiating. Burial will be in Monroe Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Dupont Church of the Brethren or to Defiance Area Hospice Center.
