John G. Phillips
Kalida - John G. Phillips, 88, of Kalida, died 5:06 a.m. Sunday, July 3, 2016 at his residence. He was born July 11, 1927 in Cygnet to the late Joseph and Magdaline (Casey) Phillips. On November 24, 1951, he married Mary Wilhelm who survives in Kalida.
John is also survived by his seven children: Chris (Lynn) Phillips of Kalida; Susan (Robert) McDowell of Columbus Grove; Sharon (Jim) Sindledecker of Scherr, West Virginia; Sandra (Dan) Kidd of Houston, Texas; Nancy (Tom) Rampe and Marie (Kevin) Schnipke all of Kalida and Linda (Jeff) Mansfield of South Bend, Indiana; 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Mary Phillips; three brothers: Mike, Wayne and Allen Phillips and a sister: Harriet Ann Yarnell.
John was former superintendent of Kalida Schools and director of Putnam County Mental Health Services. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Kalida and its Holy Name Society. He was a charter member of Kalida Lion's Club; a member of Ottawa's VFW and the American Legion, Lima Elks, Kalida Knights of Columbus, Kalida Fish and Game Club and Ohio Retired Teachers. John was past mayor of Kalida and district Governor of Lion's Club. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Kalida, with Fr. Mark Hoying officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military rites by Ottawa American Legion Post # 63 and VFW Post #9142 Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 5th at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa, where a scripture service will be at 1:45 p.m.
Memorials may be given to St. Michael's Catholic Church or the charity of donor's choice.
