Joseph A. Shively
HAMLER – Joseph A. Shively, 88, of Hamler died 3:50 am Wednesday, January 04, 2012 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice. He was born September 8, 1923 in Hamler to the late Ray and Hulda (Roller) Shively. On April 25, 1943 he married Grace Winkle who died July 18, 2011.
He is survived by a son: Marvin (Kaye) Shively of Hamler; two daughters: Phyllis (Dave) Gulgin of Ottawa and Lois (David) Niese of Leipsic; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; a son-in-law: Max Kemerer of Hicksville; and a brother: Lynn Shively of Hamler. He was preceded in death also by a daughter: Patricia Kemerer and five brothers: William, Bernard, Albert, Neil and John Shively.
Joe was a retired farmer. He was a 1941 graduate of Hamler High School. After graduation he worked a year at the tomato factory in Leipsic. Had also worked at Lima Locomotive, maintenance at Campbell Soup Co; as an electrician wiring many homes in the area; as an insurance agent; was the owner/operator of Portable Sawmill and taught dulcimer making classes at Northwest Tech. He was a member of the Zion Church of God in Hamler; a former board member of Tri-County Rural Electric Co-op; a member of Turkeyfoot Trotters Square Dancers and an honorary member of the Patrick Henry FFA. Joe enjoyed farming, fishing, camping, traveling, woodworking and loved spending time with his family.
Funeral service will begin 10:00 am Saturday, January 7, 2011, at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Leipsic with Pastor Jerry Cooke and Grandson Joel Niese officiating. Burial will follow at Marion Township Cemetery, Hamler. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Friday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic and one hour prior to service on Saturday.
