Margaret Elaine Mattern
LEIPSIC - Margaret Elaine Mattern, 93, of Leipsic, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Meadows of Ottawa. She was born March 1, 1933, in Loudonville, to the late Maxwell and Bernice (Miller) Peoples. On December 6, 1952, she married the love of her life Charles “Charlie” Mattern. Charlie preceded Margaret in death on December 12, 2013.
Margaret grew up in Loudonville with many family members in the area. Prior to her senior year in high school her family made the move to Leipsic, where she graduated from Leipsic High School and attended cosmetology school.
She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law: Beth and Kevin Lammon, Christine and Nathan Christman, both of Leipsic, and Laura and Brad Hibbard of Malinta; her grandchildren: Megan and Jen Lammon Fluss, Jacie and Tim Eding, Brittany Lammon, Heather Christman, Allison Christman, Maximilian Christman, and Alec Sills; as well as great grandchildren: Jake Eding, Luke Eding and Asher Fluss. All enjoyed spending time with Granny-gran while vacationing, playing cards, and visiting.
Margaret was a stay-at-home mom that kept busy by helping her parents with their business, Peoples Funeral Home, being active in the Leipsic High School Music Boosters, bowling league, and a golfer. She was a member of Informal Study Club, worked with a group of ladies called The Helping Hands, a Girl Scout leader, a Leipsic Village Council member, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she was a Deaconess and worked on many committees. Margaret was a very active and creative lady; she was often referred to as the “Energizer Bunny” by her kids. When her children and grandchildren were young, she made many stylish clothes for them along with decorative items for their homes as they grew up. She refurbished many pieces of furniture with eclectic designs and bright colors that were show pieces for friends and family. She loved the beach, cooking, entertaining, and her garden was always beautiful.
Also surviving are her brother and sisters-in-law: Roger and Barb Peoples, Sue Peoples, Susan Peoples, and brother-in-law, Rev. Jerry Mattern.
She is preceded in death by her brothers: Richard Peoples, Robert Peoples, and David Peoples; sisters-in-law: Linda Peoples, Agnes Mattern, Ruelea Mattern, Louise Mattern, Ruthada Johnson and Mary Jane Mattern; brothers-in-law: John Mattern, Paul Mattern, and Rev. Chalmers Mattern.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at the First Christian Church, Leipsic beginning at 2 p.m. with Reverend Timothy Eding officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to Putnam County Hospice.
In lieu of flowers the family would like you to treat you and your family to ice cream.
