Marie Jane Schmidt
CONTINENTAL – Marie Jane Schmidt, 83, of Continental died at 3:07 p.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at The Meadows of Kalida. She was born March 9, 1928, in Kalida to the late Leo and Louise (Kahle) Unverferth. On April 23, 1949, she married Paul Schmidt who survives in Continental.
Surviving are 6 children: Judy (Dave) Rau and Janet (Bob) Liffick both of Defiance, Joan (Denny) Hedrick of Continental, Jim (Karen) Schmidt of Hicksville, Jean (Rob) Carr of Defiance and John (Tonya) Schmidt of Continental; 15 grandchildren: Tod (Amy) Liffick, Tisha Rau and Kevin Tingle, Minday Liffick, Kendra Schmidt, Jordan (Alicia) Carr, Curt Hedrick, Justin (Danette) Carr, Preston Carr, Cobin Hedrick, Nathan Schmidt, Kelsey Schmidt, Damon Schmidt, Karley Schmidt, Austin Carr, Brandon Schmidt; 4 great-grandchildren: Wade Liffick, Kendall Liffick, Finn Tingle, Trig Tingle and one on the way; and a sister: Helen Sehlhorst of Kalida.
She is preceded in death also by 2 brothers: Jerry Unverferth and Denny Unverferth and 2 sisters: Dorothy Lyle and Alice Gerding.
Marie Jane retired as Treasurer for the Continental School District. She also worked at Schmidt Hardware, and was the bookkeeper for Dupont Service. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental and it Altar Rosary Society. She was also member of Catholic Ladies of Columbia, L & S Club and C.C.L. Mother's club both of Continental and VMCCA Car Club for 28 years. She volunteered as an elementary school mentor. She loved to attend her grandchildren's activities, reading, crocheting, collecting angels and was an avid fan of Sam Hornish Jr. She also loved taking antique car tours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental, with Fr. Mark Hoying and Rev. Charles Eagle officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental and one hour prior to service Saturday at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Continental Library or St. John's Catholic Church.
