Melvin Joseph Nienberg
GLANDORF - Melvin Joseph Nienberg, 74, of Glandorf, died peacefully at 7:00 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.  He was born March 22, 1940, in Lima, to the late Thomas and Mildred (Fischer) Nienberg.  On October 22, 1977, he married Diane (Wannemacher) Nienberg who survives in Glandorf.
Mel is also survived by three sons: Scott Nienberg of Glandorf, Kurt Nienberg of Hilliard, and Douglas (Megan) Nienberg of Ottawa; three grandchildren: Lily, Harrison, and Rowen Nienberg; one brother: T. Russell (Barb) Nienberg of Glandorf; one sister: Jean (Norman) Smith of Sidney; two sisters-in-law: Edna Nienberg of Glandorf and Judy Nienberg of Gahanna.  He was preceded in death by a grandson: Henry Douglas Nienberg; and two brothers: Dennis Nienberg and John "Jack" Nienberg.
Mel graduated from Glandorf High School and the University of Dayton.  He was an engineer and partner at Nienberg Supply Company and Field Gymmy Inc., in Glandorf.  He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Glandorf, its Holy Name Society, and its Men's Choir, and the Ottawa Knights of Columbus.  He also served as a Mass lector and rosary leader; and was instrumental in starting the Divine Mercy devotion at his parish.
Mel was a man of many diverse interests. He was an avid reader, who amassed quite a book collection.  He enjoyed dining out and building and fixing things in his own "custom" style.  Winter was his favorite season and snow brought out the best in him.  Most would be surprised that he was an excellent skier.  A devoted sports fan, he enjoyed watching The Ohio State Buckeyes and cheering on the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans - especially during the years his sons were down on the football field.  His booming "GO BLUE" yell was known by all Titan fans.  Mel loved being a dad and cherished being a grandpa.  He will be greatly missed by his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Tony Fortman officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa where a parish rosary will begin at 7:30 on Monday.
The family would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Anna Horstman and Dr. Mary Ann Uphaus-Myers and the wonderful staff at the Meadows of Kalida for caring for Mel the past 3 months.  Also, sincere thanks to the Putnam County Hospice Agency for their compassionate guidance during the final days of his journey to heaven.
Memorial donations may be made to Putnam County Hospice or to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
