Obituary

Michael Lynn “Mike” Niese

GLANDORF - Michael Lynn “Mike” Niese, 75, of Glandorf, took his first heavenly breath on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.

Mike was born on October 24, 1950, in Columbus Grove, Ohio, to the late Wilfred and Marie (Alt) Niese. From an early age, he developed the kindness, generosity and strong work ethic that would define his entire life. Mike was a devoted man of faith, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and someone who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.

Mike is survived by the love of his life, Judith (Schroeder) Niese. They were married on July 7, 1973 and shared nearly 53 years of marriage. Together, they built not only a home in Glandorf over 50 years ago, but a life centered on faith, family and love. He is also survived by his children: Lori Duguid of Upper Arlington, Mathew (Nikki) Niese of Chattanooga, TN, Daniel (Lindsay) Niese of Brecksville, and son-in-law, Tony Roberts of Cincinnati. He was a proud grandfather to Connor and Gabriella Duguid of Upper Arlington. Mike is also survived by his brother, Eugene (Shirene) Niese of Columbus Grove, along with many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Roberts.

Mike’s life of faith and service began at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Columbus Grove, where he served as a Eucharistic minister from the very beginning of the lay ministry program. After moving to Glandorf, he continued that devotion to Eucharistic ministry at St. John the Baptist Parish, where he remained an active member throughout his life. He also participated in “This Man Is You,” served as a past president of the Holy Name Society, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His quiet faith and willingness to serve others left a lasting and meaningful impact on his parish communities.

Mike earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from Trine University (formerly Tri-State University) in Angola, Indiana, and worked for almost 40 years at General Motors Central Foundry in Defiance, Ohio. Even with a demanding career, he always made time for what mattered most—his family. He coached his sons’ soccer, T-ball, and baseball teams and enjoyed hobbies such as golf and photography.

Mike’s craftsmanship was one of his greatest gifts. A talented woodworker, he created countless beautiful pieces for family, friends, and his parish. In retirement, his passion only grew, and his projects multiplied, benefiting many. Some of his work even reached across the world, with two wooden plaques displayed in Glandorf, Germany. Through volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and traveling with a group of men to Alabama each spring for five years to assist those in need through Catholic Charities with critical home repair, Mike used his skills to serve others in meaningful, lasting ways.

He loved to travel with Judy, often choosing the scenic backroads on their way to visit family or attend their grandchildren’s events. Together, they found joy in the journey as much as the destination, always exploring and making memories along the way.

Mike treasured his friendships. Many began in his college years and lasted a lifetime, while others were formed through the many circles he touched. He had a unique way of bringing people together. It was not uncommon to see his driveway filled with trucks on a Friday afternoon, friends gathered to share a bourbon, plan the next project, and enjoy each other’s company. Those gatherings were always filled with laughter—a reflection of Mike’s spirit.

Mike will be remembered for his generous heart, his steady presence, his creative hands, and his unwavering love for his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, the memories he created, and the countless acts of kindness he shared. He will be deeply missed.

Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Glandorf with Fr. Matt Keller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa.

Memorial donations may be made to Putnam County Homecare and Hospice.
