Paul A. Maag
LEIPSIC - Paul A. Maag, 80, passed away on 11:45 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2014, surrounded by his family in prayer, at The Meadows of Leipsic following an extended illness. He was born in Frogtown, Ohio on November 29, 1933 to the late Frank P. and Margaret (Nierman) Maag.
Paul grew up in Kalida and attended Kalida High School. He later lived in Ottawa for over 30 years and for the past 23 years he resided in Leipsic.
In 1956 he married Janice Schroeder of Ottawa and they had six children together. She passed away May 24, 2006. On May 28, 1996 he married Brenda Rashley and they were happily married for 18 years.
Paul was the owner and operator of the former Maag's Hotel and Cardinal Room for over 40 years where he enjoyed interacting with his customers and providing them with fine meals and good stories. He served on the Putnam County Board of Elections from 1989 to 2006. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Leipsic, the Ottawa Knights of Columbus, Pope Leo Council, Findlay, the Leipsic Eagles and VFW, the Ohio Bar Owners Association, and the Putnam County Rat Pack, along with friends Albert Warnimont, Lee Kuhlman, Ray Halker, Stu Campbell, Tom Reynolds, Sr. and Bert Alstaetter.
He enjoyed his many trips to Las Vegas and the sunny beaches of Florida, was an avid Detroit Tigers Fan and poker player, but most of all, he cherished time spent with his family and friends. He especially loved taking his grandchildren on golf cart rides and treating them to ice cream treats at the Viking Corner.
He is survived by his wife Brenda Maag, son, Timothy (Dawn) Maag of Ottawa, daughters, Julie (James) Parker, Sharon (Craig) Peterson, and Joyce Maag all of Leipsic, and Janet (Steve) Swift of Kalida; twelve grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Carl (Frances) Maag of Ottawa, Clayton (Dolores) Maag of Kalida; sisters, Delores Kiernan of Highland Heights, KY., and Sr. Francis-Margaret of Dayton, KY; stepsons, Tony and Danny Rashley of Wauseon; a brother-in-law, Eugene Brandon of Cairo; a sister-in-law, Millicent Maag of Findlay; and many nieces and nephews.
Paul was also preceded in death by a son, David Maag; son-in-law, Barry Basinger; sisters, Alice Brandon, Janette (Al) Jacob and an infant sister; a brother, Oscar Maag; and twin baby brothers, Peter and Paul Maag.
Visitation will be held at 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME in Leipsic where there will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. by Ottawa K of C. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Leipsic with Fr. Ken Schroeder officiating.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family. The family requests memorial donations to be made to Leipsic Food Pantry care of the First Lutheran Church, Leipsic or to a charity of the donor's choice.
