Richard Merwin “Dick” Cass
LEIPSIC – Richard Merwin “Dick” Cass, 95, of Leipsic, passed away at 8:20 p.m., Monday, January 12, 2026, at The Meadows of Leipsic. He was born December 16, 1930, in Bellevue, Ohio to the late Willard C. Sr. and Hetta F. (Geren) Cass. On December 26, 1970, he married Judy Scott, who preceded him in death. On June 7, 2003, he married Shirley L. Klear, who preceded him in death on October 28, 2020.
Dick is survived by a son, Michael M. Cass of Houston, TX; five grandchildren: Mason Cass, Mariah Cass, Shawn Cass, Joshua Cass and Kimberly Cass; a brother, Robert (Gloria) Cass of Defiance; and a sister-in-law, Alvera Cass of Miller City.
He was also preceded in death by two sons: Robert A. Cass and William Cass; and seven siblings: Erma (Orville) Cunningham, Willard (Doris) Cass Jr., Donna (Raymond) Shafer, Carl (Phyllis) Cass, Edward Cass, Elaine (Clifford) Shellenbarger and Norma Jean (Donald) Thomas.
Dick was a retired mechanic from General Motors Powertrain, Defiance. He had also worked with his father on the railroad in Bellevue, Ohio. Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean War from 1948 – 1952. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, Continental American Legion Post 541, Ottawa VFW Post 9142, Ottawa Fraternal Order of Eagles #2234, Moose Lodge and AMVETS.
In his younger years, Dick played cello, guitar and sang in a gospel group band. He enjoyed camping at many Ohio and Indiana campsites. After marrying Shirley, they both loved traveling, visiting many states, including Hawaii.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Meadows of Leipsic, Putnam County Hospice, Dr. Doone, Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home and Father Scott Kramer for their compassion and care.
Funeral Services will begin at 12:00 p.m., Friday, January 16, 2026, at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental with Deacon David Maas officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental with military rites by the Continental American Legion. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
