AVON PARK, FL – Sharon L. Place, 77 of Avon Park, FL (formerly of Leipsic) died peacefully on May 7, 2025, at Good Shepherd Hospice, Sebring, FL with her husband James by her side. She was born January 8, 1948, in McComb, the only daughter to the late Serge and Edna Louellen Shoemaker. On April 10, 1981, she married James Place and he survives.
Also surviving are two children: Christine (Mike) Butler of Leipsic and Dennis (Tracy) Thomas of Ft. Wayne; seven grandchildren: Pam (Tony) Vo, Michael (Erin) Butler, Eric Butler, Bryant (Brooke) Butler, Johnathan (Candace) Thomas, Mason Thomas, and Miranda Thomas; 9 great-grandchildren: Josef, Alexis, Noah, Ezra, Calliope, Lennon, Lawson, Susan, and Tobias.
She was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Faith Rieman.
Sharon graduated from Leipsic High School in 1966. She worked as a secretary in many offices including the unemployment office, Dr. Zahra, and Dr. Pheister. She also worked as head security guard at Protec where she retired in 2013. Sharon and Jim liked to travel including Hawaii, Arizona, Michigan, and Florida. Sharon loved to find great deals shopping and was up for a game of cards, trivial pursuit, or Bingo anytime day or night. Her love of reading carried over to her children who both learned to read at the early age of three. Sharon always had an extra seat or two at the table and welcomed anyone to fill them. She loved to cook and bake, and over the years baked and decorated hundreds of cakes with her cousin Linda Warniment who was more like a sister. Linda's death was greatly felt by Sharon. Sharon will be remembered for her beautiful smile and helping heart.
A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the Leipsic Methodist Church with Pastor Laurie Beaty officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
