Thaddeus W. Schroeder

LEIPSIC - Thaddeus W. Schroeder, 98, of Leipsic died peacefully at 7:10 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022, at The Meadows of Kalida. He was born December 5, 1923, in Leipsic to the late Charles and Amelia (Kuhlman) Schroeder. On October 26, 1950, he married Florence Hermiller, who survives at The Meadows of Kalida.  They were married 71 years.

Thad is survived by 7 children: Jean Ann (Anthony) Kenney of Dayton, Carol (Dennis) Bockrath of Kalida, Victoria (Dale) Schroeder of Columbus Grove, Charles (Tammy) Schroeder of Leipsic, Gary (Keek) Schroeder of Leipsic, Jan (James) Leis of Miller City, and Jodi (Corey Gilbert) Reeder of Greenwood, Indiana; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lou Ann Hermiller.

He was also preceded in death by two children: Dwaine and Glen Schroeder; five brothers: Marcellus (Mary) Schroeder, Paul (Lucille) Schroeder, James (Norma) Schroeder, Robert Schroeder, and Albert (Sylvia) Schroeder; five sisters: Lucille (Bill) Aelker, Florence (Wilbert) Otto, Alice (Lewis) Otto, Anna Marie (Aloysius) Warnecke, and Mary Jane (Elmer) Rieman.

Thad was a retired farmer who loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was not one to shy away from work or people and always had a smile on his face and ready to lend a helping hand. He took great pride in his garden and spent countless hours tending and harvesting the produce. Farming, playing cards, and visiting family and friends were always a joy to him. He was a World War II Veteran who served in the 20th Armored Division. He received the Putnam County Distinguished Veterans Award and was a hero to all his family.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Leipsic. He also was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9547 in Leipsic, American Legion Post 287 in Leipsic, Ottawa Fraternal Order of Eagles 2234, and Glandorf Rod and Gun Club. He also served as a Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative trustee.

A funeral mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2022, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Leipsic with Fr. Mark Hoying officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by Leipsic American Legion Post 287 and VFW Post 9547.  Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic as well as one hour prior to the mass on Monday at St. Mary's Parish Life Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Putnam County Council on Aging, or the charity of the donor's choice.
