GLANDORF – Velma P. Balbaugh, 81, of Glandorf died 2:02 p.m. Thursday, September 23, 2021 at the Meadows of Ottawa. She was born January 6, 1940 to the late Leo and Appolonia (Maag) Verhoff. On October 22, 1960 she married Thomas H. Balbaugh, who preceded her in death on July 30, 2014.
She is survived by 3 children: Christine (Karl) Lang of Grand Blanc, MI, Lisa (Tony) Meyer of Glandorf and Shawn (Joan) Balbaugh of Glandorf; 11 grandchildren: Adam (Jill) Vorst, Morgan (Jordan) Schroeder, Tonya (Jordan) Westrick, Mason (Jessica) Meyer, Trenton Meyer, Marisa Meyer, Tayla Meyer, Logan Balbaugh, Jayla Balbaugh, Jacob Balbaugh, and Alivia Balbaugh; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Velma is preceded in death by 2 brothers: Leonard (Sally) Rieman and Elmer (Mary Jane) Rieman and a sister: Dorothy (Richard) Ellerbrock.
Velma retired in 1996 from Phillips ECG, Ottawa. She was also a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Glandorf. She graduated in 1958 from Glandorf High School and attended nursing school to become an LPN and then worked at St. Rita's Medical Center. She was a member of the St. Johns Altar Rosary Society, C. L. of C., Ottawa Eagles, and the Lima Moose. Velma enjoyed fishing and camping, playing cards with her card club, baking, bowling and traveling. She and Thomas also hosted exchange students over the years.
Velma's funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Tony Fortman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa. There will be a scripture service will be 1:45 p.m. and a parish rosary will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to National Shrine of St. Jude or Putnam County Hospice.
